Cairo Sportsman’s Club was founded in 1945 by a group of 17 dedicated hunters and shooters. The club met initially at the Odd Fellows Lodge in Cairo that was located next to the Cairo Elevator. Eventually the club was able to purchase nine acres of land on Wentz Road and began building dedicated ranges with the addition of backstops and block trap trap houses. The club expanded through the 1950s and expanded its activities by raising pheasants for release into the surrounding area for hunting.
The 1960s through the 1980s saw a slow down in club membership and activity, and the club was close to being sold due to lack of funds as it entered the 1990s. However, a generous donation from Myf Fisher and her son Ron kept the club afloat. A dedicated fundraising drive was started in 1991 to make the club solvent again.
This led in 1998 to the securing of a loan that allowed the remodeling of the existing club house and the addition of a full kitchen onto the building. As the club continued into the early 2000s into the present, it has continued to hold events that draw in shooters of all ages and experience.
The club continues to serve both its members and the community by serving as a training range for the Shawnee Police Department and the home of the Allen County Sharp Shooters 4-H club. Additionally, events such as fish fries and trap nights are open to the general public.
The club currently offers two trap ranges, a short rifle range, a long rifle range, a pistol house/range, an archery range, and a fishing pond (catch and release only).
